AN 1852-C GRADED AU50 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC

This date is a favorite of mine as it ranks as one of the toughest Charlotte quarter eagles to locate in AU and higher grades; especially with unadulterated coloration. There is just one 1852-C quarter eagle—the PCGS MS63 coin which I purchased for $26,450 from the October 1999 Bass sale—that I regard as unequivocally Uncirculated.

I grade this coin “AU55 net AU50” as it is a very choice coin which shows some lines on the obverse which are likely the result of a gentle wiping many years ago. Both sides feature lovely rich green-gold with some reddish hues on the obverse. The strike is above-average and the quality of the planchet is excellent.

No PCGS/CAC AU50 1852-C quarter eagles have sold at auction and according to my records only two CAC approved 1852-Cs in any grade have ever been auctioned: a PCGS EF45 in March 2012 and a nice but slightly overgraded NGC AU53 which brought $5,760 in January 2022.

You might have to wait years to find a better 1852-C than this one.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
