CHOICE PCGS/CAC AU55 1850-C
The scarcity of this date in the higher AU grades is much misunderstood; even by knowledgeable specialists. Given the fact that PCGS has graded 32 in AU55 and AU58 grades combined (20 in AU55 and 12 in AU58 but these numbers are vastly inflated by resubmissions), you would think this is a common date but the CAC numbers tell another story: just three in AU55 with eight finer.
This is an absolutely lovely example with natural rich golden color and ample luster. The strike is a bit soft on the stars and at the very centers; this is typical for the date. The surfaces are really clean with just a single small mark seen in the right obverse field.
No CAC approved AU55 has ever appeared at auction, while the sole AU58 with CAC approval is an NGC coin which sold for $6,463 in March 2014. Just a single non-CAC PCGS AU55 has sold since 2006 and it brought $4,920 in August 2022.
This is an extremely choice coin worth of a fine high-end Charlotte quarter eagle collection.
CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.
