OUTSTANDING PCGS/CAC AU58 1849
The 1849 is yet another issue which doesn’t get the respect it deserves. It isn’t as scarce as the 1844 or the 1848, but it compares favorably to the 1846 and the 1847. In Uncirculated, the 1849 is very scarce and it is rare in MS62 and finer.
If there is a finer 1849 quarter eagle in AU58, I’ve yet to see it. This coin has wonderful eye appeal due to its rich reddish and orange-gold hues over frosty, mark-free surfaces. Some weakness of strike is noted on the eagle’s right leg.
This exact coin is the sole 1849 in this grade to sell at auction (see below).
