SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU53 “CAL-FREE” 1848

As I have written before, the 1848 is an under-appreciated issue (as are many of the P mint quarter eagles made in the 1840s) which is lost in the shadows of its famed counterpart, the 1848 CAL. The Cal-free variety is quite scarce in the low to mid-AU grades and very rare in full Mint State.

This is among the best circulated 1848-P quarter eagles I can recall handling. It has choice, even green-gold color, a sharp strike and extremely nice, totally unadulterated surfaces. I could easily see this coin in an AU55 holder.

Ex: Stack’s Bowers 2019 ANA: 2041 where it sold for $5,760

CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.
