CONDITION CENSUS PCGS/CAC MS62+ 1847

This date can be located in all circulated grades, but Uncirculated 1847 quarter eagles are rare with likely fewer than 10 known. There are two in PCGS MS62+ (I just sold the other one), as well as a PCGS/CAC MS63 which sold for $14,494 in the Heritage 6/2018 auction, and an exceptional PCGS MS64 which I sold back in 2002.

This piece has great skin with blazing mint luster resting beneath natural green-gold color; the coin I just sold (see above) was more semi-prooflike, especially on the obverse. While this coin is better than a “standard” MS62, it is a bit too ticky in the left obverse field to call it an MS63. Thus, the 62+ grade which—in this instance—I think is spot on.

With just two finer 1847 quarter eagles currently accounted for, this piece fits comfortably in the Condition Census for the issue.

CAC has graded two in MS62+ with just one finer.
