UNDERRATED PCGS/CAC 1846 IN AU53
The 1846-P is around twice as scarce as its counterpart the 1846-D but it is about one-third as popular; hence its “underrated” tag.
In my opinion, this is a solid AU55+ to AU58 that PCGS properly net graded as an AU53 due to some marks clustered in the upper left obverse field. The color is an outstanding medium orange-gold.
Just a single CAC approved 1846 quarter eagle in any AU grade (an NGC 58 which traded in late 2020) has ever sold at auction.
CAC has approved two in AU53 with 18 finer.
