RARE PCGS AU58 1844

The 1844 is the second rarest collectable business strike Philadelphia quarter eagle struck prior to 1864; only the 1842-P is rarer. My best estimate is that there are around 60-70+ known from a mintage 6,784. It is rare in any AU grade and I can’t recall having seen more than three or four in this range which I actually liked. I am aware of three Uncirculated pieces: a PCGS/CAC MS61 which sold for $15,275 in January 2014, an NGC MS62 which I purchased for $9,775 in 2002 and a PCGS MS62.

This is one of a very small number of coins in this set which the collector was never able to buy a CAC approved example, and the only on which was ever available to him was the DLRC PCGS/CAC AU58 which went cheaply in April 2019 at $8,900.

This piece has around 50% of its natural color and surfaces still extant. It is well struck and free of significant marks. For many specialists, this will be more than enough coin to satisfy their 1844 quarter eagle itch.
