VERY RARE 1842-C $2.50 GRADED AU55+ BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC

There are few Charlotte quarter eagles which are as rare in choice AU and higher grades than the 1842-C. I doubt if there are more than a half dozen really nice AU coins known as well as two Uncirculateds: a PCGS MS62 and an amazing PCGS/CAC MS65.

This is one of the two or three best circulated 1842-C quarter eagles which I am aware of. It is far better struck than normal for the date with the centers showing much more detail than normal. The surfaces are immaculate with just a few tiny marks seen while the color features rich fiery reddish and orange-gold hues which are very attractive. If just a touch more luster were present, this coin would be a slam dunk AU58 and it is far nicer than your “typical” AU55 Charlotte quarter eagle.

This is the sole PCGS/CAC AU5 or 55+ to have sold at auction; see below for the pedigree. In October 2018, a PCGS/CAC AU58+sold very reasonably for $15,600, while a PCGS/CAC AU58 brought $20,400 as Heritage 7/2021: 3073.

This is a highlight of the Star City Collection, and it is unlikely that a nicer 1842-C will become available in the next few years.

Ex Heritage 9/2018: 3171 where it brought $11,400.

CAC has approved this one coin in AU55 or AU55+ with five finer.
