POPULAR 1840-C GRADED PCGS/CAC AU53

The 1840-C is the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from Charlotte. It is actually more available than the 1840-P, but it sells for more as it is from a more heavily collected series than its Yankee counterpart.

This piece is characterized by pretty reddish-gold color which surrounds the mostly greenish-gold centers. A few small scrapes preclude a higher grade but this piece has very good eye appeal for the date and grade.

Just three PCGS/CAC AU53 1840-C quarter eagles have sold at auction since mid-2013 and none have been offered since the Summer of 2018.

CAC has approved five in this grade with13 finer.

Ex Legend 2/2018: 122 where it sold for $5,500.
