CHOICE PCGS/CAC 1839-O

HM-1; high date with wide fraction.

From a numerical standpoint, there are a ton of 1839-O quarter eagles which have been assigned an AU53 grade (25 at PCGS and 42 at NGC, to be exact). However, many of these have been “improved” and have been all but ruined in the process while the number of choice, unadulterated examples grows smaller by the year.

This is a wonderfully original piece with natural reddish-tinged russet surfaces which do not appear to have ever been lightened. There is dirt in the recesses on both sides while the details are sharp. The surfaces are as clean as one could hope for and some luster peeks through at the borders.

No PCGS/CAC AU53 has ever sold at auction, while an NGC/CAC AU53 went cheaply as Legend 12/2019: 571 at $4,700. In April 2021, Heritage sold a non-CAC PCGS AU53 for $5,880.

A lovely example of this extremely popular one-year type which is also desirable as the very first gold coin struck at the newly-opened New Orleans mint.

CAC has approved six in this grade with 32 finer.
