OUTSTANDING PCGS/CAC AU55+ 1860-D $5.00, ex Fairmont

Winter Variety 46-GG. Medium D mintmark as described by PCGS on the slab insert.

Given the rarity and cost of the 1861-D, for many collectors the 1860-D represents the final chronological issue which is sought for a date set. It is comparatively available in the low-to-mid AU grades, but is seldom seen with natural color and choice surfaces.

This coin is simply outstanding and I assume that PCGS’ reason for not grading it a full “58” is due to a short, sharp reverse mark in the field under the O in OF.

This is the sole PCGS/CAC AU55+ to sell at auction. In their 2023 ANA sale, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU53 for $8,100, while the same firm got $11,400 for a PCGS/CAC AU58 in November 2022.

Here is a perfect high-grade D mint half eagle for a special seven-mint set.

From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold and ex Stack’s Bowers 5/2023: 1067 at $10,800, Fairmont Hoard.
