SCARCE PCGS/CAC AU50 1857-D $5.00

The 1857-D is a scarce issue which should command a significant date premium over the “common” 1852-1854 Dahlonega half eagles. Nice AU coins are challenging to locate, while fully Uncirculated 1857-D half eagles qualify as very rare with—at most—a dozen or so known.

This coin would easily grade AU55 were it not for a few obverse scuffs, the most noticeable of which is located in the field between stars one and two. The color is excellent and there is a considerable amount of luster. There are likely not many more examples of this date which are 100% unmolested as is this piece.

This exact coin is the sole PCGS/CAC AU50 1857-D half eagle to sell at auction. In November 2022, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC AU55 for $7,200.

CAC has approved just four in this grade with 15 finer.

From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold and ex Stack’s Bowers 3/2023: 5062 where it brought $6,600; Fairmont Hoard.
