CONDITIONALLY RARE PCGS/CAC AU58 1856-D $5
Winter Variety 39-FF.
Virtually every MS60 or finer 1856-D is from a hoard dug up in a South Carolina field around 30+ years ago, and many of these show hairlines from having been mishandled after they were unearthed. I have seen just a few coins in AU55 and finer that were CAC quality.
This is likely the third best circulated 1856-D half eagle I have seen, with the only better coins being the record-setting Stack’s Bowers 4/2022: 5081 Fairmont “Hendricks” coin that realized $16,800, and the Stack’s Bowers PCGS/CAC MS61 coin which I bought for $16,800 as 2022 ANA: 3070. Both of these are off the market for many years.
The Star City coin is very well struck for an issue which is almost always seen with softness at the centers and the frosty surfaces show attractive natural golden-orange color.
The sole PCGS/CAC AU58 to sell at auction is the coin that I mentioned above.
An extremely important coin for the advanced Dahlonega half eagle collector.
From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold.
