The 1853-D is one of the two most available half eagles from Dahlonega.
This piece appears to be choicer than the assigned grade. It is very strongly detailed with no weak areas noted. The surfaces are clean and show unadulterated deep green-gold color. Under this color, a good deal of luster remains. There is dirt in the recesses of the lettering which is a sign that the surfaces have not been lightened.
No PCGS/CAC EF45 example of this date has sold at auction.
A great coin for the grade and a piece that will almost certainly be acquired by a connoisseur searching for a nice D mint $5 or a type set.
CAC has approved 10 in this grade with 36 finer.
