WHOLESOME CAC APPROVED PCGS GRADED AU58 1852-D $5, ex Fairmont
Winter Variety 32-V.
The 1852-D is among the more available half eagles from Dahlonega. Properly graded PCGS/CAC AU58 coins are scarce and in strong demand as type coins, especially for high-end seven-mint sets.
Not all people are enamored with the “Fairmont look” and this coin is lighter than the typical D mint half eagle from this source. It has a typical erratic strike but displays conspicuous amounts of luster. A few pecks on the cheek of Liberty are mentioned for accuracy.
This exact coin is one of just five 1852-D half eagles in PCGS/CAC AU58 that have sold at auction since 2019.
In the recent Stack’s Bowers 3/2024 sale of the Fairmont coins, a more common 1854-D in PCGS/CAC AU58 sold for $11,400. This coin is certainly worth this or more.
CAC has approved 10 in AU58 with only three finer.
From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold and ex Heritage 7/2023: 3214 at $9,600; earlier Stack’s Bowers 2022 ANA: 3056 where it brought $7,800.
