The unheralded 1850-D is actually the fifth scarcest of 26 half eagles from Dahlonega. It is very hard to locate in any AU grade with unmolested color and surfaces.
This is a very nice example with dark natural green-gold color. The mintmark is lightly impressed as is typical for this issue.
Just three PCGS/CAC AU50 1850-D half eagles have sold at auction since 2012. A PCGS/CAC AU53 brought $6,900 in September 2023.
