RARE AND IMPORTANT 1848-D/D $5 GRADED AU50 BY PCGS AND APPROVED BY CAC

Winter Variety 22-O, die state 1. “D over Low D variety;” attributed by PCGS on the slab insert. Rare.

The 1848-D/D has become the single most desired variety of all the Dahlonega half eagles and it is truly rare with around a dozen or so currently known. This is a reasonably early die state with the lower mintmark punch fairly clear with 5x magnification.

The coin itself is choice with natural color and a sharp strike despite some strong die clashes on the obverse.

There have been two PCGS AU55s sold with a CAC approved example (ex Fairmont) bringing $19,200 in the SB 2022 ANA, and the other (non-CAC) selling for $22,200 in August 2022, and previously in July 2018 for $18,000. In the recent Stack’s Bowers 3/2024 sale, a PCGS EF45 which wasn’t identified as a D/D by PCGS when it was submitted still managed to bring a robust $14,400.

PCGS records 21 graded, but this includes a number which were late die state coins which are not as desirable as early state coins such as this.

An outstanding coin and a highlight of the Star City Dahlonega half eagle set.

CAC has approved just five in all grades with this one coin in AU50 and four finer.

From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold.
