RARE TALL D 1841-D PCGS/CAC AU53

Winter 5-B. Tall D mintmark; designated on the insert by PCGS. A rare variety.

The 1841-D is the Dahlonega half eagle from the first three years of coinage most often seen, but it is not a common date; especially in higher grades. Varieties are known with the Tall D reverse from 1840, and the Small D reverse as seen on the 1842-D Small Date. There are an estimated 20-25 1841-D Tall D half eagles known including two in Unciruclated. This PCGS/CAC AU53 likely qualifies as a Condition Census example for the variety.

There are a number of significant obverse die cracks (as on all 1841-D Tall D half eagles), but they do not impact the overall strike which is very sharp. The surfaces show extensive marks with russet color overlaid with splashes of rich orange-gold. A small amount of luster is visible on either side.

In August 2022, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS/CAC 1841-D AU53 Small D half eagle for $8,400. This exact coin (see below) is the single finest of the Tall D variety to ever sell at auction, and the only finer I’ve handled was the PCGS AU58 from the Auraria Collection.

This is the single finest CAC approved example of this specific die variety.

From the Star City Collection of Dahlonega coins, ex Heritage 5/2022: 4776 where it brought $12,000.
