The backstory behind the 1907 High Relief double eagle is well-known and fascinating. This, combined with the incredible beauty of even the bowdlerized rendition of St. Gaudens’ masterpiece, makes the High Relief the most popular trophy coin in all of American numismatics. These coins are plentiful in grades up to and including MS63 but they have become hard to find in properly graded MS64, especially with original color and surfaces.

This is a carefully hand selected example which traces its origin from a fussy connoisseur’s cabinet. It shows glowing mint frost with no signs of having been dipped or “improved” and the color is a pleasing even medium to deep yellow-gold. A few small scuffs in the right obverse are really all that keeps this from strong consideration at the gem level. Two tiny grease spots, as made, are seen on the obverse; these are pin-prick in size.

The last non-CAC PCGS MS64 High Relief to sell at auction was Stacks Bowers 7/13: 4601 which realized $27,906.

For many collectors, MS64 is the perfect grade for this popular issue given the high price of Gems and the spotty quality of lower grade Uncirculated pieces.
