RARE SLIDER 1892 DOUBLE EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL
Only 4,430 business strikes of this date were made and the 1892 is easily the rarest Type Three issue struck after 1891. It is not as rare as some collectors and dealers claim it is but examples are generally either found really ratty or really nice with very little left over in between.
This fresh-to-the-market example has not been available for many years. It appears to have no real wear–even on the high spots–but enough bag friction and handling marks to knock it out of consideration for a Mint State grade. The luster is dramatic with full cartwheels on both sides and this enhances the nice natural yellow-gold and rose color. The majority of the scuffs are shallow and confined to the obverse fields; the reverse on its own grades at least MS61 to MS62.
Only three PCGS AU58 1892 double eagles have sold at auction since April 2011 and the most recent, for a non-CAC piece, was Stacks Bowers 3/14: 4115 which brought $15,275.
This is the nicest AU58 1892 double eagle I can recall having seen and it is just the third different example I have offered in the last five years.
CAC has approved just two in this grade with seven finer.
