The 1890-CC is one of the more available Carson City double eagles. There are many graded AU58 (and above) but many have been dipped or have negative eye appeal due to excessive marks. Choice, original pieces have become hard to locate and are in strong demand among date and type collectors.
This frosty slider has very good eye appeal due to its rich, even natural orange-gold color. It is likely that it never entered circulation but it does have a bit of “bag friction” on the cheek and some luster breaks in the fields from rubbing against other coins while loose in a bag. The abrasions are not deep and the only one worth noting is a small reeding mark on the cheek.
There have been three PCGS AU58 1890-CC double eagles sold at auction so far this year. The price realized for these has been $5,875 (for a CAC approved coin), $4,700 and $5,288. In my opinion, the present example is nicer than any of these three.
