The rarity profile of this date is similar to many of the Type Three double eagles made at the San Francisco mint in the late 1880′s: it is common in MS60 to MS62, scarce in properly graded MS63 and rare in MS64 and above. Only 13 examples of the 1889-S have been graded higher than this at PCGS and Trends in MS64 is a solid $21,500.
This is a choice, appealing example with very clean surfaces and rich orange-gold color which can be seen on both the obverse and the reverse. The strike is excellent and this is a very attractive coin for the grade.
No PCGS MS63 with CAC approval has ever sold at auction. The last three non-CAC PCGS MS63′s brought $4,935, $5,031 and $5,141 respectively.
The last PCGS MS64 1889-S, a non-CAC coin, sold for $15,275 in Heritage’s 4/13 auction. Personally, I’d rather own this nice MS63 at around a third of the price and save my money for other rarities in the Type Three series
