The 1865 is the second most available Civil War double eagle from Philadelphia after the very common 1861 but it is scarce in Uncirculated, especially with original surfaces. Most of the higher grade (MS62 to MS64) 1865 double eagles on the market are from the S.S. Republic shipwreck.

This piece has original surfaces and it doesn’t show the slight granularity which the shipwreck 1865′s show. It is bright and frosty with enough scattered marks to limit the grade but absolutely no wear or luster breaks in the fields.

The last PCGS MS61 1865 double eagle to appear at auction was Heritage 12/09: 1929, which brought $8,625. In October 2010, an NGC example sold at auction for $9,488. Since then, the market for choice Civil War gold has increased; in some cases considerably.

If you collect Type One double eagles or specialize in Civil War gold, this is a coin that deserves some consideration on your part.
