The 1861-S is the scarcest of the five Civil War double eagles from this mint. It has been affected least by hoards and it remains a hard coin to find even in EF as long as it is original and choice.
While showing a good amount of wear, this piece is remarkably free of marks with choice, original surfaces. Both the obverse and reverse show pleasing rich green-gold and orange color and some hints of luster are seen in the protected areas.

CAC has approved four in this grade with 20 finer.
