The 1860-S double eagle is a conditionally rare issue. It is common in grades up to AU55 but nice AU58’s are scarce, and this date is both rare and expensive in Uncirculated. Most of the coins I see in AU58 holders are bright and unappealing.
This choice, dirty gold example shows even natural lime-gold color and lacks the dark highlights seen on the pieces which have been repatriated from European bank vaults. It has light rub on the high spots, minimal detracting marks and a much better than usual strike for this issue.
The last PCGS AU58 1860-S double eagle to sell at auction sold for $5,288 as Heritage 8/14: 4096.
If available, a nice PCGS MS61 example of this date would sell in the $12,500-15,000 range. In my opinion, for most collectors, this nice AU58 at half the price is better value.
