The 1841-C is a scarce early date half eagle with the average surviving example grading in the EF40 to AU50 range. In Uncirculated it is very rare with just six or seven pieces known.The finest is a single NGC MS64 from the Pittman collection; the present example is clearly the second finest known.

This fresh-to-the-market example has never before been offered for sale and, to the best of my knowledge, it is the finest of exactly two known in MS62 to MS62+. It is extremely vibrant and crisply detailed with superb glowing yellow-gold color and the sort of appearance that suggests it has never been cleaned or processed. There are just a few too many tiny ticks in the fields to grade a full MS63 but this piece is clearly better than your average MS62 Charlotte half eagle and it has a remarkable overall appearance.

There is another PCGS MS62+ example of this date, ex Heritage 1/10: 1623 (and earlier graded MS62 by NGC and sold as Milas:440) which brought $23,000 in Heritage’s 6/10 auction. That coin was nice but it had more abrasions than the present example as well as a detracting spot in the left obverse field. The finest known, ex Pittman I:953 and earlier owned by Col. Green and King Farouk, brought $42,350 as a raw coin back in October 1997. As mentioned above, it grades MS64 today.

Here is a coin which has nearly everything going for it: it is fresh to the market, conditionally rare, the finest available for the date to collectors and it is a “real” 62+ with as much visual appeal as one can imagine. It deserves to reside in the finest set of Liberty Head half eagles and it is among the most exciting Charlotte half eagles that I have offered so far this year.
