CHOICE EF 1838-D HALF EAGLE
Variety 1.
The 1838-D is numismatically significant as the first half eagle from this mint and the only one produced which uses the popular Classic Head design. It is not rare in terms of total numbers known to exist but choice, problem-free examples in collector grades constitute less than 10% of the known pieces in this range.
This very choice example exhibits totally natural russet color which is even save for a darker area of toning on the cheek of Liberty. The surfaces are smooth and show even wear with good detail at the centers and a wholesome overall appearance. Locating a nice EF 1838-D is very difficult and this is the grade range which appeals to most collectors.
A similar PCGS EF45 1838-D half eagle sold for $8,225 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 6161 but it was not approved by CAC. Only two PCGS EF45′s have sold at auction since 2003.
This is the best available quality for less than $10,000 and it is an truly pleasing piece for the date or type collector.
CAC has approved only two in this grade with 10 finer.
