The 1884 is the rarest Three Dollar gold piece from the 1880s as a business strike. It is not the rarest Proof but it is more difficult to find than its mintage of 106 would suggest; it is probable that fewer than three dozen are known. This example is certainly among the best Proof 1884 Threes known. It is bright and shows a stark “black and white” appearance with very strong contrast noted between the devices and fields. The contrast is just about enough to designate as a Deep Cameo or Ultra Cameo and I have seen few Proofs of this date with contrast this strong. The surfaces are very clean with no appreciable hairlines or marks and the eye appeal is exceptional. If you have been searching for a really first-rate Proof of this interesting type, you should give this wonderful gem strong consideration.
