Only 3,000 business strike 1879 three dollar gold pieces were made but many have survived, including a number of choice, appealing coins. This issue makes a great alternative to an 1854 or an 1878 as a type coin as the present example shows.
This semi-prooflike example is characterized by wonderful deep natural orange-gold and lighter greenish hues, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and the reverse. There is a small amount of “chatter” in the left obverse filed which keeps this piece from grading at least a point higher but the eye appeal is excellent for the grade.
The last non-CAC PCGS MS64 1879 three dollar to sell at auction brought $7,638 as Heritage 4/13: 5706.
For just a small premium over an 1854 or an 1878, you can add this coin to your type collection and have an issue with a much lower original mintage figure.
