The 1870-1872 three dollar gold pieces are all undervalued issues which are seldom offered for sale in the higher circulated grades. Only 2,000 1872′s were struck for circulation and of the few hundred which remain, most have poor eye appeal.
This gem slider has the naked-eye appearance of an MS61 to MS62. It is semi-prooflike with nice light green-gold color which deepens towards the edges. The surfaces are very clean and there is a slight amount of friction on the high spots and the obverse fields.
Heritage 7/13: 5667 was also graded AU58 and approved by CAC and it realized $3,525. In my opinion, it was not as nice as the present example.
As with many dates in this series, the 1872 is very good value at current levels.
CAC has approved five in this grade with six finer.
