Just 2,500 were struck and the 1869 is a scarce date in all grades. It is usually found in the EF40-AU53 range and properly graded AU55′s are scarce and very undervalued.
This orange-gold example is lustrous with slight reflectiveness seen in the protected areas. The surfaces are choice except for an old scrape on the cheek of Liberty and the detail is better than usual for this often weakly impressed issue.
There have been just two PCGS AU55′s sold at auction since the Summer of 2009. One brought $2,191 while the other realized $2,415. Neither was approved by CAC.
Many exceptional values exist in the Three Dollar gold series and this nice 1869 is clearly one of them.
