The 1855-S is numismatically significant as the first Three Dollar gold piece produced at the San Francisco mint. Not including the unique 1870-S, only four dates of this type were made in San Francisco and the 1855-S is the second hardest to find after the 1860-S. Choice, original pieces are seldom offered and probably no more than 10% of the surviving examples are CAC quality.

This well detailed example shows nice natural light orange-gold and green hues with faint undersplashes of rose. There are no marks of note except for a hard-to-see obverse dig right alongside the back of the princess’ head.

Choice original EF examples are generally offered around once a year at auction and only two PCGS EF40 examples with CAC approval have sold since early 2010.

CAC has approved three in this grade with seven finer.
