For most collectors, the 1871-CC is the earliest date half eagle from this mint which they will purchase. Of the 20,770 struck, around 125-150 are known which makes this date much scarcer than the 1874-CC. Lower grade pieces are sometimes available but are often harshly cleaned and very unattractive.
This well-circulated example has even wear and full detail which corresponds, in my opinion, with the assigned grade. The color is a natural russet hue and there are no obvious marks or scratches on the obverse or the reverse.
The only auction comparable for a PCGS F12 is Heritage 4/13: 5814 at $1,880; that coin, while in an old green holder, looks more like a VG than a Fine and shows considerably less detail than the present example.
