While common in circulated grades, the 1857 half eagle is scarce and undervalued in Uncirculated. There are likely fewer than three dozen known in this range with most grading MS60 to MS62. I have never seen or heard of a Gem 1857 and know of only one or two that I grade MS64.
This choice example shows soft frosty luster with buttery yellow-gold color on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is sharp and the surfaces show just a few scattered ticks. There are some interesting clashmarks at the central obverse and the upper reverse which are, of course, mint-made.
A PCGS MS63 sold for $7,763 in Stacks Bowers 11/11 auction.
A pleasing No Motto type coin and not far removed from the tail end of the Condition Census for the date.
