Variety 39-FF.

The 1856-D is seen in collector grades less frequently than other Dahlonega half eagles of this era, and it is a scarce issue in all grades, despite the existence of a hoard of higher grades pieces which has impacted the population in MS60 to MS62.

This fresh-to-the-market example is clean and wholesome, and if it was it just a bit better struck it would likely have graded VF35 if not EF40. Some dirt can be seen in the protected areas and both sides are free of significant marks.

A significantly more worn example graded PCGS VF25 sold for $1,880 as Heritage 7/14: 4594. There are no pertinent auction records for VF30 or VF35 1856-D half eagles.

This is likely the most affordable choice example of this date currently available to Dahlonega half eagle collectors.

CAC has approved one in this grade with 12 finer.
