The 1855-O is among the scarcer No Motto half eagles from the New Orleans mint. Only the 1842-O and the 1847-O are distinctly harder to find and there are fewer than 100 pieces known in all grades. This is an exceptionally hard issue to find with natural color and choice surfaces.

This piece could rightfully be called “VF38″ if such a grade existed as it is very, very close to being fully EF in terms of sharpness. The surfaces are very clean and choice with both sides showing lovely natural green-gold hues. The stars at the left are weak due to strike and this is seen on most 1855-O half eagles.

No PCGS VF35 examples have sold at auction since October 1992. An unattractive PCGS EF40 brought $3,525 as Heritage 2/15: 4227.

An affordable but significant half eagle for the New Orleans gold specialist.

CAC has approved just this one example in VF35 with five finer for a total of six for the date.
