In this grade, the 1848-C sells for essentially a “type coin” price but it is clearly a scarcer issue than dates such as the 1847-C, 1849-C and 1850-C.
This choice, original piece shows nice russet and deeper orange-gold color with traces of dirt seen on both the obverse and reverse. The wear is even and the surfaces are free of severe marks.
No CAC approved PCGS EF40 1848-C half eagles have ever sold at auction. Heritage 9/14: 4435, graded EF45 by PCGS and approved by CAC, brought $3,326.
CAC has approved two in this grade with 20 finer.
