Along with the 1799, the 1798 is the most affordable 18th century silver dollar. It is common in EF grades although most coins in 45 holders have been cleaned or “improved” at one time. As collectors become more sophisticated, they are paying significant premium for the few surviving coins which show complete originality.
This is one of the nicer EF45 1798 dollars which I have seen. It shows a lovely two-tone appearance with lighter lilac-grey relief details contrasted by deeper gunmetal and iridescent gold highlights. The surfaces are immaculate with just a few small adjustment marks seen at the central reverse; the fields lack any marks of note and show even wear. As is typical on this die state, the centers have some weakness of strike but the overall detail is excellent and this is a really pleasing coin. In fact, as seen on the pedigree below, it was nice enough to have been in two of the greatest variety collections of bust dollars ever formed.
Ex Warren Miller, Dr. Robert Hesselgesser collections.
CAC has approved 21 1798 dollars in this grade with 16 finer.
