VERY RARE UNCIRCULATED 1840-O DRAPERY HALF DIME
The 1840-O With Drapery is one of the truly scarce half dimes from this mint. It is generally seen in lower grades and in Uncirculated it is very rare with likely no more than five or six known. The two finest known are a PCGS MS64 which has been sold no less than three times in the last year in various Legend auctions and a PCGS/CAC MS63 which brought $30,550 as Lot 30190 in Gardner I (June, 2014).
This example has wonderful eye appeal for this date with an exceptional strike and undisturbed frost on both sides. The color is great with multiple hues seen on both sides, especially at the obverse rim. A small, well-hidden scrape on the obverse between stars one and two removes this coin from a full MS63 grade. Personally, I like it more than the above-referenced PCGS MS63 example.
No PCGS MS62 or MS62+ has ever sold at auction. An NGC MS62 brought $9,488 as Richmond III: 9488 all the way back in March, 2005.
A very important coin for the advanced specialist.
CAC has approved one in this grade with one finer (MS63)
