The 1911 is among the more common half eagles of this type but, unlike dates such as the 1908, it is very scarce in MS65 and unavailable finer. This is evidenced by the fact that PCGS has still graded just one coin finer than MS65 (an MS66). The 1911 sells for a small premium above the 1908 but it should be much more. PCGS has graded forty nine 1911′s in MS65 with one finer; the 1908 has a population of 209 in MS65 with 19 finer.
Few 20th century coins are better looking in Gem that the Indian Head half eagle and this piece is a no-questions Gem with rich natural orange-gold color and wonderfully choice surfaces. There is no discernible friction on the cheek and the breast feathers are full and rub-free. The eye appeal is great for the date and grade.
There are just two auction records for PCGS/CAC MS65 examples of this date and they are the same coin: both are for $13,800 and one occurred in 8/11 while the other occurred in 1/12.
In my opinion, few 20th century gold types are more undervalued in higher grades than the Indian Head half eagle. The 1911 I offer here is a wonderful Gem and it is excellent value as I am asking just a small premium over a PCGS/CAC 1908; a coin which is far more available.
CAC has approved 17 examples in this grade with none finer.
