RARE UNCIRCULATED 1892-O HALF EAGLE
After a nearly four decade hiatus, production of half eagles at the New Orleans mint resumed in 1892. Only 10,000 were struck and the 1892-O is scarce with under 100 believed known, mostly in the AU55 to MS61 range. Unlike the No Motto dates from this mint, the 1892-O didn’t see extensive circulation and most of the survivors have been repatriated from overseas.
This fresh, frosty example is strictly “new” with splashes of rich golden color over typically scuff surfaces. This date is often dull and grainy in appearance and this piece presents a nice exception to that rule.
The last PCGS MS61 to sell at auction brought $5,288 as Heritage 1/14: 6764. No MS61 with CAC approval has sold at auction.
