Carson City made half eagles for only five years in the 1880′s. The 1884-CC is the last of these issues and it is comparable in rarity to the 1883-CC. Of the 16,402 struck, there are a few hundred known with nearly allin the EF40 to AU50 range. Properly graded AU58 examples are quite rare and this date is very rare–and very expensive–in Uncirculated.
This example is the very epitome of a “gem slider” with just the slighest amount of friction on the high spots keeping it out of the MS62 range. This coin is choice and original with lovely orange-gold color which is faintly accentutated by blushes of rose. The strike is razor sharp with absolutely no areas of weakness and the surfaces are very clean with no significant marks. The naked-eye appearance of this coin is really special.
The last two auction trades for PCGS AU58 examples of this date occured in 2011. The first, Heritage 1/11: 6947, was for $8,625 while the second, Heritage 3/11: 4777, was for $8,338. Neither coin was CAC approved nor as choice as the example that is presently offered.
If you can find a PCGS MS61 example of this date, you are looking at a purchase that will probably be for at least double the amount of what I am asking for this piece. It seems like great value to me and I strongly recommend it to the collector of high end Carson City half eagle who is focused on originality and value.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with just one finer (MS61).
