A total of 93,600 business strike 1864 quarters were struck but many were melted and others saw considerable use in circulation. Today, this Civil War issue is very popular with multiple levels of collectors, not the least of which include Seated Quarter specialists. It is scarce in the MS63 to MS64 range and very rare in Gem.

This satiny borderline Gem shows pleasing pale russet and amber-gold color on the obverse and, slightly more so, on the reverse. It is very well struck with excellent eye appeal and a single small reeding mark, from contact with another coin, is all that keeps it from grading a full MS65.

There have been only two auction records for an MS64 example of this date since the start of 2011; the last of these was Heritage 6/13: 3331 which brought $2,585. No MS64+ examples have ever sold at auction and the last MS65 quarter was sold all the way back in the Summer of 2004.

This coin has a lot going for it, not the least of which is the fact that its is a great value in today’s market.

CAC has approved two MS64′s and two finer. This is the only MS64+ to have been approved by CAC.
