Attractive Uncirculated 1838 Bust Quarter
B-1, R-1.
The 1838 Capped Bust quarter is numismatically significant as the final year of issue for this type. It is also a transitional issue with another type—the Seated Liberty quarter—introduced later during the same year.
The 1838 Capped Bust quarter is not common in Uncirculated and most seen in the MS60 to MS62 range are dipped and “rubby.” Pieces with nice natural color are not often seen.
This pleasing coin shows natural album color with rings of red, gold, blue and green on the obverse and the reverse. There is excellent luster and were it not for a few ticks in the left obverse field this piece would grade at least a point higher.
No PCGS MS61 has sold at auction since early 2008. An NGC MS61 with dipped surfaces and no CAC approval realized $2,820 as Heritage 4/14: 4214.
An affordable but truly attractive Capped Bust quarter which is ideal for type.
CAC has approved this one coin in MS61 with 19 finer.
