By 1885, speculation in Proof gold dollars was rampant and the high mintage of 1,105 demonstrates this. Today, there are likely as many as 200-300 Proof 1885 gold dollars known with the average coin grading PR64 to PR65.
This example has a Gem quality obverse with nice fields and pleasing natural medium orange-gold color. The reverse shows some old hairlines at the center and this has caused PCGS to, rather unfairly, knock this coin down from a higher level. Unlike nearly every piece of Proof gold graded “63,” this piece has not been harshly cleaned or mishandled.
The only auction record for a PR63CAM 1885 gold dollar is Heritage 5/07: 3308 which brought $4,025.
Everyone would like to own a piece of Proof gold but not everyone has the budget to make such a purchase. This is an exceptional opportunity for the collector with great taste on a modest budget.
