The 1853-O is the most common gold dollar from this mint. It is easy to find in grades up to and including MS63. Properly graded MS64′s are rare and the 1853-O is very rare in Gem.

This very sharply struck borderline Gem shows lovely even yellow-gold color with some greenish-gold tints on the obverse. There are a few small ticks in the left obverse field and a mint-made semi-circular line on the cheek while the reverse shows and a small mint-made lintmark through the base of the value to the top of the second L.

Heritage 11/14: 3178, graded MS64 by NGC, is the only CAC approved example in this grade to be auctioned. It sold for $3.055.

A Gem 1853-O gold dollar, if available, would cost close to 3x the amount of this lovely MS64.

An excellent type coin.

CAC has approved four in this grade with four finer.
