The 1850-O is the scarcest gold dollar from the New Orleans. It is not the most expensive in higher grades (that honor is held by the 1855-O which is prized for its one-year type status) but it is clearly the hardest to find. In MS62, the 1850-O is rare and much undervalued and it is almost never seen above this.

This frosty example has vibrant light yellow-gold color with typical slightly grainy luster. It is well struck and free of significant marks with better than usual eye appeal for the date and grade.

There have been a total of eight APR’s for MS62 examples of the 1850-O gold dollar since the beginning of 2005 but only one, ex ANR 7/05: 111 at $3,565, has been graded by PCGS.

CAC has approved three in this grade with just one finer (an MS63).
