The 1906-D is a numismatically significant date in the Barber Dime series as it was struck during the first year of production for this new facility. It is common in grades up to MS64 but Gems are very scarce and superb pieces are extremely rare. PCGS has graded just two finer than this, both in MS67.
The obverse displays lovely multi-colored peripheral album color which frames a silvery-white center; the reverse shows light golden color turning to reddish-gold at the border. Other than a small reeding mark below the eye of Liberty, the surfaces are nearly flawless.
Since July 1999 there have been 11 APR’s for PCGS MS66 examples of this date. Prices have ranged from a low of $1,955 to a high of $2,875.
If you are putting together a high grade date set of Barber Dimes or if you need a Gem example for type purposes, this piece is perfect due to it eye appeal and affordability.
CAC has approved seven in this grade with one finer.
