The 1887 is a common issue in the Liberty Seated Dime set but superb Gems are rare, especially with excellent color. Most of the MS66 and finer pieces have been dipped and show unnatural “blast white” surfaces.
This coin has absolutely amazing color with dramatic rainbow hues, probably from storage in an old Wayte Raymond album, across much of the peripheral obverse: the reverse is less extensive toned with a pearly-white center framed by a thin crescent of multi-hued color. If it were not for one small contact mark on the obverse, below OF, this coin would grade MS67. As it is, the eye appeal is totally off the charts with the aforementioned color something that must be seen in person to be fully appreciated.
The only PCGS MS67 1887 Dime to sell in recent years brought $9,200 in Heritage’s 6/10 auction.
This is the only PCGS MS66+ of this date and there have been just three graded higher, all in MS67.
If you are looking for an exceptionally toned Seated Dime for your type set, this is the coin!
Ex Heritage 2/13: 7652 where it sold for $2,820 in an OGH PCGS MS65 holder.
