The 1849-C is a scarcer date in the Charlotte quarter eagle series and it is extremely difficult to find with choice surfaces and natural color.
This coin has the detail and appearance of an EF40 and I feel it has been conservatively graded by PCGS. The strike is a bit weak on the reverse and PCGS appears to have mistaken this for wear; there is enough “meat” on the obverse to grade this coin an EF40. It shows nice green-gold color with a good amount of dirt encrusted in the reverse lettering.
Only one PCGS VF35–this coin– has sold at auction in the last decade.
When it was last offered for sale in early 2012, this coin was fresh to the market and had not been offered since the 1950′s/1960′s.
Ex Goldberg 2/12: 1192 where it sold for $1,955.
CAC has approved this one coin in VF35 with another five higher.
